The Georgian capital city of Tbilisi has officially welcomed the festive season as the city’s main Christmas tree lit up during a ceremonial event at First Republic Square. Holiday lights across all districts of the capital were also illuminated on Friday, marking the start of New Year celebrations.
The lighting ceremony, accompanied by a theatrical musical performance, was attended by Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
Addressing the gathered crowd, Kaladze congratulated citizens on the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, wishing peace and prosperity to the country.
“New Year’s anticipation fills our beautiful capital with kindness. Today we light the main Christmas tree and starting today, the Christmas Village will also open - a place always associated with special memories and emotions. I am confident this year will be no exception.
“When the tree lights up, everyone makes a wish. There are many wishes, but one stands above all - peace. Peace brings kindness, development, progress and well-being. May peace prevail in all of Georgia and the world. May our beloved Tbilisi and our country be filled with goodness. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” Kaladze said.
The Christmas Village features an ice rink, amusement rides, a holiday train and Santa’s House.
The Christmas Village will close with a festive event on January 7, marking the Orthodox Christmas holiday, while the ice rink and Tbilisi’s main Christmas tree will remain in place until January 14.
