Georgian Parliament Vice Speaker Thea Tsulukiani on Wednesday criticised the United Kingdom’s decision to sanction Georgian TV channels Imedi and POSTV, saying the move will ultimately increase the broadcasters’ popularity.

In a social media statement, Tsulukiani described the step as “an impotent attack on freedom of expression in the name of British democracy.”

She added the likely outcome will be higher ratings and greater public support for the two channels.

“The result will be increased ratings and even more popularity for the two channels,” Tsulukiani wrote.

She added that those who once maintained power through the broadcaster Rustavi 2 would not understand why many in Georgia are reacting to the sanctions with humor, noting that a smaller outlet - Maestro - ultimately prevailed despite having fewer resources.
