Trump: Canada Wants the Benefits of Statehood Without Becoming a State

Canada wants to enjoy the benefits that come with being a U.S. state without actually becoming one, U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on social media.

“They have also been charging our great farmers massive tariffs for many years. That will no longer continue,” Trump said.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have collapsed, after which Washington imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.

In response to the U.S. tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would match Washington’s new measures “dollar for dollar.”

According to Carney, the retaliatory tariffs will take effect on September 8.
