The United States has announced a large-scale humanitarian operation, dubbed “Project Freedom”, to escort civilian vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Donald Trump.
In a statement on social media, Trump said dozens of neutral ships are currently stuck in the strategic waterway due to the ongoing regional conflict. He stressed that the vessels are not involved in any military activity.
Trump added that several countries had privately appealed to Washington for assistance in securing the release of their ships.
He said the US had agreed to ensure safe passage for vessels belonging to nations not involved in the Middle East conflict, describing them as “neutral and innocent observers”. He also noted that affected countries had indicated they would not resume operations in the area until it is considered safe for navigation.
Trump also said the operation is set to begin on Monday morning, Middle East time.
He also warned that conditions aboard the stranded ships are deteriorating, with some crews facing shortages of food and drinking water, raising concerns over their health and safety.
The United States Central Command said the operation will involve escort missions in the Strait of Hormuz, with the deployment of US warships, more than 100 aircraft and approximately 15,000 personnel.
