Adjara Supreme Council Chair accuses opposition of hypocrisy over fuel supplies to Abkhazia

Adjara Supreme Council Chairman Tsotne Ananidze has accused the same political groups that he said previously blocked economic ties with Tskhinvali of now creating controversy over fuel supplies to Abkhazia.

Writing on social media on Friday, Ananidze said the fuel was being supplied by the private sector and within the framework of Georgia's law.

"The same political groups that once completely closed economic bridges with Samachablo are now creating a fuss over the supply of fuel to Abkhazia by the private sector within the framework of the law," Ananidze wrote.

He said that before the United National Movement came to power, there had been greater public trust and direct human and economic ties between communities on both sides of the conflict.

Ananidze recalled that residents of Tskhinvali used to travel to Georgian-controlled areas and take citrus fruit back with them, including from his own family.

"There was genuine, popular trust, which for some people has now become merely a subject of political speculation," he wrote.
