Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Friday said Poland would continue supporting Ukraine but urged Kyiv to demonstrate greater goodwill in bilateral relations, stressing that Warsaw could no longer be the only side making conciliatory gestures.
Tusk said Poland's position on supporting Ukraine would remain unchanged in future negotiations, while also calling on Polish officials to exercise caution when making commitments on additional financial assistance.
"Ukraine is at war, but Poland bears the main burden of protecting our border. At the same time, it is also defending Europe's eastern frontier from external threats and this should receive special recognition," Tusk said.
The Prime Minister added he had seen "signals of awareness" among Ukrainian politicians about the damage caused by recent tensions, saying responsibility for the escalation lay with Kyiv.
"We must find ways to have an honest conversation about the past without increasing tensions," he said.
Tusk stressed that strong Polish-Ukrainian relations were in the interests of both countries but required goodwill from both sides.
"Warsaw can no longer be the only one constantly demonstrating goodwill. I hope this firm position will not be accompanied by hatred or hostility, because that will not lead to any meaningful outcome," he said.
