Ukraine Strikes Key Roscosmos Facility and Russian Military Airfield, Zelenskyy Says

Ukrainian forces struck two strategic targets inside Russia overnight on August 15 — the Progress Rocket and Space Centre in Samara and the Savasleyka military airfield in the Nizhny Novgorod region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The Progress facility, located around 900 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, was reportedly targeted using FP-5 Flamingo missiles. A major fire broke out at the site, which is part of Russia’s Roscosmos state space corporation.

The facility is considered important to Russia’s military-industrial complex and is involved in the production of electronic systems used in cruise missiles, including Kalibr and Kh-101 missiles, as well as drones and electronic warfare systems.

Ukraine also targeted the Savasleyka military airfield, located roughly 700 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The base is used by MiG-31K fighter jets capable of carrying Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.

A series of explosions was reported at the airfield overnight, followed by a fire.

An oil facility in Ust-Luga, more than 800 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, was also damaged, according to the Ukrainian side.

“Our plan is being implemented, and it is important that Russia’s war potential is reduced. Peace is needed, and this must be clearly visible in Russia through concrete damage to specific facilities,” Zelenskyy said.
