US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a closed-door meeting at the White House, with strengthening Ukraine’s air defence and efforts to achieve a peaceful end to the war topping the agenda.
Kyiv’s top priority in the talks is reinforcing its air defence capabilities, including securing additional missiles for the Patriot air defence system.
“The number one priority is anti-ballistic missiles and strategic cooperation with the United States,” Zelenskyy said earlier in the day.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss the peace process, a drone cooperation agreement and a licence for the production of Patriot air defence missiles in Ukraine.
Later today, Trump and Zelenskyy are due to attend a memorial ceremony for the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
According to the Ukrainian president’s office, Zelenskyy also plans to meet all 100 US senators, including lawmakers who co-sponsored legislation calling for tougher sanctions against Russia.
Trump is also scheduled to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House later today.
The Ukrainian president’s office said Zelenskyy will additionally hold talks with Finnish President Alexander Stubb during his visit to Washington.
