Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked Canada for announcing a military assistance package worth nearly $900 million, saying the support will help strengthen Ukraine's air defence capabilities amid continued Russian attacks.
Speaking after a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ankara, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had received a substantial package of Canadian assistance for air defence and that additional defensive equipment was expected to arrive soon.
“We currently face a major, perhaps even the greatest, shortage in air defence. At the same time, we have received a significant air defence assistance package from Canada. We are grateful for this support, and it is encouraging that additional elements are already on their way,” Zelenskyy said.
Carney announced a military aid package valued at almost $900 million, including military equipment, ammunition and air defence systems.
The Canadian PM also said Canada would continue supporting Ukraine's energy sector, particularly ahead of the winter heating season, and assist the country with reconstruction efforts and its integration into the European and global economies.
Zelenskyy welcomed the announcement, describing it as "a very strong package".
"First and foremost, we are working to strengthen our air defence capabilities. Protecting lives is the highest priority, and Russia's attacks with ballistic missiles, other missiles and drones are acts of terrorism that we must overcome together with our partners," he said.
