U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will visit Kyiv on Sunday, September 6, and Russia should suspend its attacks during that period, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
According to Zelenskyy, the visit was finalized on Friday, September 4.
He said Witkoff and Kushner would first travel to Moscow before arriving in Kyiv on Sunday.
Zelenskyy said that, as during previous visits by U.S. officials, Ukraine would ensure the “normal functioning of Russian airspace” to guarantee the safety of the American representatives.
“There will be no air strikes from our side, and Russia must likewise ensure a ceasefire, with no air strikes, for the period necessary to conduct these negotiations and resolve the logistical issues related to the American visit,” the Ukrainian president said.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine wants to ensure that the visit and talks with the U.S. officials are as constructive and substantive as possible.
At the same time, he stressed the need to explore realistic options for bringing the war to an end.
“We will see what proposals Steve and Jared have and what they hear from Moscow,” Zelenskyy said.
