Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine is gaining significant international backing under the new circumstances created by US President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Russia.
Speaking about the results of intensive talks with international partners, Zelenskyy stressed the shared goal of achieving a “genuine and lasting peace” for Ukraine.
“If everyone perceives the opportunities and threats in the same way, then it will be possible to achieve sustainable peace. There is already strong support, and it comes under the new conditions, when a ceasefire deadline for Russia has been announced,” he said.
Last month, President Trump sharply criticized Vladimir Putin over Russia’s massive bombardment of Ukraine and gave the Kremlin 50 days to reach peace with Kyiv. He later shortened the deadline to 10 days, setting August 8 as the cutoff date. If Russia refuses, Trump warned of sanctions targeting countries buying Russian oil, along with additional penalties directly against Moscow.
On August 6, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow. Trump later described the meeting as successful.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy did not rule out the possibility that Russia might now be more inclined to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine.
