Zelenskyy hopes to end war by winter with Trump’s help

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he hopes the war with Russia can be brought to an end by winter with the help of US President Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy made the remarks during a meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“I hope we can end this war by winter, and Trump will help us achieve that,” Zelenskyy said.

Trump, for his part, said both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to bring the war to an end.

Asked whether Putin would agree to meet him at the G20 summit in Miami, Trump replied: “I don’t know if he would agree, but he wants to end the war. They both want to end the war.”

“It’s time,” he added.

During the meeting, a journalist reminded Trump of his remarks at last year’s UN General Assembly, when he said Ukraine could regain all of its territory, and asked whether he still held that position.

“I think they Ukraine and Russia will reach a deal. I don’t want to say exactly what that deal will involve,” Trump responded.

At the beginning of the meeting, Trump also commented on Ukrainian strikes against Russian oil refineries, saying he intended to discuss the issue with Zelenskyy because of their impact on fuel prices.

Earlier in the day, addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Trump said the war in Ukraine would end “sooner than people think.”
