Georgian opposition politician Zurab Japaridze said freedom of speech and expression remained the public's "last tool" and could not be eliminated, as court proceedings continued for protesters detained during a demonstration outside Tbilisi City Assembly.

Speaking on Tuesday, Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, said it was impossible to suppress freedom of expression in Georgia.

"Freedom of speech and expression is the last tool we have, and they cannot kill it. It is impossible," he said.

Japaridze also said criticism of the government had always been a normal part of political life in Georgia and argued that it could not be eradicated.

"This country will not become Turkmenistan. Tbilisi will not become Ashgabat. If they arrest someone over one banner, another banner will appear," he said.
