Georgian PM Introduces Tamaz Borashvili as New State Security Service Chief

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has formally introduced Tamaz Borashvili as the new head of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) to the agency’s personnel.

Kobakhidze thanked SSSG employees for their service and highlighted Borashvili’s more than two decades of professional experience within the country’s security system.

The Prime Minister also thanked outgoing SSSG chief Geka Geladze for his work and wished him success in his new role as Deputy Interior Minister.

“The State Security Service is one of the key institutions responsible for protecting the interests of our state and safeguarding our national security,” Kobakhidze said, stressing the contribution of the agency’s personnel.

He described Borashvili as a career security official whose long-standing service had provided him with extensive institutional knowledge and professional experience.

“Mr Tamaz Borashvili is a career representative of this system, which is particularly important. More than 20 years of service in this field brings exceptional knowledge and experience, which will help further strengthen this institution,” Kobakhidze said.

The Prime Minister added that state institutions, including the SSSG, must continue to develop and said Borashvili’s consistent career advancement reflected his professional experience and record of service.

Geladze, who is moving to the post of Deputy Interior Minister, congratulated his successor and thanked Kobakhidze for the trust and support he had received during his tenure.

“This institution is a unique family, with its own culture and way of life, and Mr Tamaz comes from within this system,” Geladze said. “He has worked here for many years, and I am confident that he will lead the institution with dignity and further strengthen it.”

Borashvili thanked Kobakhidze and the Georgian Parliament for their confidence and pledged to work with the agency’s personnel to strengthen national security and the SSSG’s institutional capacity.

“Together with this strong team, we will work with even greater determination to strengthen the security of our country and our service and to address the challenges Georgia faces every day,” Borashvili said.

He also thanked SSSG personnel, saying many of them had worked alongside him for years, and expressed appreciation to Geladze for his service.

Georgia’s Parliament elected Borashvili as head of the State Security Service earlier on Wednesday, with 83 MPs voting in favour and none against. Under Georgian law, the head of the SSSG is elected by Parliament for a six-year term upon nomination by the government.

Borashvili succeeds Geka Geladze, who stepped down as SSSG chief on September 14 and is set to serve as Deputy Interior Minister.
