EU pledges €30 million to support Moldova amid Russian energy blackmail

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas has condemned the Kremlin’s use of energy as a tool for blackmail against the people of Moldova, labeling it as “outrageous albeit unsurprising.”

In a statement on X, Kallas reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to assisting Moldova during this crisis, announcing, “The EU will provide €30 million to help Moldova buy and transport natural gas to their people.”

Kallas emphasized the EU’s unwavering support for its allies, stating, “In times of need, the EU will always support its friends and allies.”

The move comes as Moldova continues to grapple with energy insecurity exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and Russia’s manipulation of natural gas supplies.
