The United National Movement (UNM) has called on President Salome Zourabichvili to use her constitutional authority to pardon former President Mikheil Saakashvili before her term in office formally concludes on December 29.
According to Tina Bokuchava, chairperson of UNM, Zourabichvili will only have a few days remaining to exercise this power.
“We face a significant obstacle and disagreement with President Zourabichvili on the issue of pardoning Mikheil Saakashvili,” Bokuchava stated.
She also emphasized the importance of uniting political forces under a common framework to meet public expectations. “It’s critical to convert the enormous energy of public demand into tangible political outcomes. The leader of such a format must enjoy high public trust, and currently, President Zourabichvili undoubtedly holds that trust.”
The UNM hopes that Zourabichvili will heed the public’s call and take action to resolve the political impasse surrounding Saakashvili’s detention.
