Giorgi Baramidze, the political secretary of the opposition party United National Movement (UNM), has accused the Georgian government of aligning its stance with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interests. Baramidze claimed that the government is trying to rewrite not only Georgian history but also challenge decisions made by international courts in The Hague and Strasbourg regarding the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.
“The Georgian government is saying what Putin wants to hear because it’s attempting to rewrite Georgia’s history and undermine decisions made by The Hague and Strasbourg that held Russia responsible for aggression, war, and occupation,” Baramidze said.
He also accused Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, of trying to alter the internationally recognized conclusions that Russia is the aggressor in the 2008 war.
“Ivanishvili wants to change the fact that Georgia was 100% exonerated, and that Russia was declared the aggressor, initiator of the war, and the occupier responsible for ethnic cleansing,” Baramidze added.
His comments came after Ivanishvili’s recent remarks in Gori, where he discussed the 2008 war and expressed a desire to apologize for it.
“After the October 26 election, we will find the strength to apologize for the fact that, in line with the task assigned to them, the treasonous National Movement engulfed our Ossetian brothers and sisters in flames in 2008,” Ivanishvili had stated.
