The political council of the opposition Strong Georgia party voted to withdraw its parliamentary list and officially relinquish its seats, party leader Mamuka Khazaradze announced on social media on Thursday. The decision was approved by the majority of the council and represents a coordinated stand with other opposition parties.
Khazaradze emphasized that it is crucial for no political entity with a representative mandate to legitimize the ruling Georgian Dream parliament, adding all opposition parties have declared their intention to forgo their parliamentary mandates as a protest against the election results.
According to Georgia’s electoral code and constitution, political parties may revoke their lists after the newly elected parliament is recognized, with individual members formally requesting mandate termination. The first session of parliament, where the mandates are recognized, allows opposition parties to officially submit their resignations.
In a call for unity, Khazaradze invited all opposition parties to coordinate their withdrawal from parliament on the same day.
“Together, we can put an end to any speculation and demonstrate our collective stance,” he said. Khazaradze added that they are open to carrying out this symbolic political action in collaboration with the president to ensure transparency.
