The Georgian opposition party United National Movement (UNM) has announced that Levan Vashalomidze, a prominent party member and former Chairman of the Adjara Autonomous Republic, has been released by Kazakh authorities.
Vashalomidze was detained in Kazakhstan based on an arrest warrant issued by Russia in 2022 due to his involvement in supporting Ukraine’s defense. Concerns had been raised over the possibility of his extradition to Russia.
UNM expressed gratitude to Ukraine for its swift intervention and to Kazakhstan for its cooperation in securing Vashalomidze’s release. However, the party noted that legal proceedings are still ongoing and called for a quick resolution to allow him to return to Georgia soon.
“We urge our international partners to continue monitoring this case closely and to support a just and timely conclusion,” UNM stated.
