European Commission Vice President Věra Jourová emphasized that the upcoming elections on October 26 are pivotal for Georgia’s European future and a significant test of its democracy. Speaking during a debate on Georgia in the European Parliament, Jourová expressed concerns over recent actions by the Georgian government that contradict the country’s declared goal of joining the EU.
She highlighted that introduction of some laws have distanced Georgia from its European aspirations, despite the public protests, including the adoption of the Foreign Influence Law and proposals targeting the LGBTQ community and weakening democratic institutions, alongside increasing anti-EU rhetoric.
The Vice President reiterated that while the EU has reduced political engagement with Georgia and paused financial support, the path forward remains open if the government reverses course, retracts anti-democratic laws, and aligns with EU values.
Jourová concluded by stating that the EU will closely monitor the elections, hoping for a peaceful, fair process that reflects the true will of the Georgian people.
“The EU’s door remains open, but the Georgian government must realign with EU values and norms, and reaffirm its commitment to Georgia’s European path. We stand ready to support and work with all Georgians on their journey toward EU membership,” she stated.
