Today marks a historic day for Moldova, as alongside the presidential election, a referendum on the country’s European future is taking place.
There are 11 candidates running in the presidential race, including the incumbent pro-European president, Maia Sandu.
According to Moldovan law, if the referendum is successful, the constitution will be automatically amended to set EU membership as a national objective.
Polling stations will close at 9:00 PM local time.
Recent polls indicate that around 60% of Moldovans support joining the European Union.
Moldova was granted candidate status for EU membership in 2022. For the referendum to be considered valid, a minimum voter turnout of 33% is required.
