Hospitals full as new virus spreads in China

Hospitals in China are struggling to cope with a surge in cases of a newly spreading virus, HMPV, raising concerns that it could spark another epidemic similar to COVID-19.

According to NDTV, respiratory illnesses have spiked sharply in recent days, reminiscent of the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak. Neighboring countries such as Indonesia, India, and Japan have issued advisories for their citizens, urging caution and preparedness regarding the situation in China.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that respiratory infections typically peak during the winter season. While acknowledging the strain on hospitals, they emphasized that “these illnesses appear to be less severe and spreading at a slower pace compared to last year.”

HMPV, or human metapneumovirus, causes flu-like symptoms and can lead to severe respiratory complications, particularly among children and vulnerable groups. The virus, first identified in 2001, has no available vaccine.

Symptoms of HMPV include cough, fever, and shortness of breath, with severe cases potentially leading to bronchitis or pneumonia. The incubation period usually lasts 3-7 days, and recovery can take several more days depending on the severity of the infection.

HMPV spreads via respiratory droplets, such as those produced through coughing or sneezing, and can remain active on surfaces at room temperature, increasing the risk of transmission through contact.

Although not identical, HMPV bears some similarities to COVID-19, as both target the respiratory system and share symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, and breathing difficulties. Their modes of transmission are also alike, primarily spreading through air and physical contact.

Health authorities worldwide are closely monitoring the situation, urging preventive measures to contain the spread of this infectious disease.
