UN Secretary-General congratulates Georgia’s new president and reappointed prime minister

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has extended his congratulations to Mikheil Kavelashvili on his assumption of the presidency and to Irakli Kobakhidze on his reappointment as Prime Minister of Georgia. In two separate letters, Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to partnering with Georgia in advancing sustainable development and strengthening democratic principles.

In his message to President Kavelashvili, Guterres emphasized Georgia’s valued role as a UN partner, expressing hope for enhanced cooperation to achieve shared objectives, including those outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Pact for the Future. The Secretary-General highlighted the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, promoting gender equality, fostering inclusion, and upholding human rights.

To Prime Minister Kobakhidze, Guterres stressed the significance of regional peace and security, noting the UN’s ongoing support for the Geneva International Discussions and assistance to conflict-affected communities. He urged the Georgian government to prioritize peaceful dialogue, adherence to the rule of law, and respect for human rights, while also encouraging gender parity in governance and leadership positions.

Both congratulatory letters reiterated the United Nations’ steadfast support for the government and people of Georgia, underscoring a shared commitment to advancing global and regional goals.
